The student must be starting to look a little deeper into Karate. This means focusing more on the Hara while increasing speed and power of each technique and snapping the leg back after each kick, then driving into a strong stable stance and executing Kime Waza on the upper body techniques such as Gyaku Tsuki. One learns to focus power on a precise target while conserving energy, coupled with proper breathing, tension and a powerful snapping action of the techniques while exhibiting good balance. In Kata, one now has a choice which depends on one’s technical ability and body composition. One should favor a technically easier exercise of which one has a sound knowledge and subsequently will achieve a better result. Jiyu Ippon Kumite allows a greater freedom of personal expression as both attacker and defender take up a fighting posture.
